The Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dalí

The Persistence of Memory is an oil painting on a fairly tiny canvas, more specifically it's 24.1 by 33 centimeters, though you may not know that at first glance since images of it online don't tend to show the canvas or other objects for comparison. Given the way it was painted you can't see the brush strokes, the image looks smooth. It depicts a fairly weird, dimly lit landscape which is mostly empty. The most prominent feature is three big melting clocks. They look as if they were soft, with a texture that one might image is similar to that of cheese.

The ground looks really flat, it is dark brown as if it was dirt, except it's perfectly smooth. On the distance you can see water, maybe it's a lake or the sea. On the right side of the background, surrounded by water, is what seems like a large rock formation. It is reflected really clearly on the water. The reflection is so clear that it gives the impression that the water is perfectly still, as though there are no waves. The picture doesn't show a lot of the sky, but it looks a bit like the scene is taking place during sunrise or sunset, since the top part of the sky is dark blue and the lower part is yellow. There are no clouds and there is no visible moon or sun.

On the left side of the background you can see what looks like a slab on top of the ground. The top is gray and perfectly smooth, and the sides are the same color as the ground.

Finally, going back to the melting clocks, we see that they are positioned near the foreground dangling off of other objects.

The first one has a warm gray rim, and is dangling on a small, thin tree which has only one branch and no leaves on it. The tree sits on top of a cube that is protruding out of the ground. This cube is the same color and texture as the ground, and it looks perfectly geometrical.

The second clock has a cool gray rim, and is on top of a bizarre object which bears no resemblance to any real life things. The object has a pale peach hue and round shapes. The right side of it seems to fade into the ground while the left side has some wrinkles and what looks like some dark colored whiskers coming out of it. I would compare it to a sack that maybe has some round things inside it which give it more volume.

The third clock has a golden rim, and it sits on the block mentioned earlier. It is the clock that is easiest to see and which is closest to the viewer. It seems to have some sort of bug on top of it, like a fly. Next to it there's an object that resembles the clocks but with no numbers or hands on it. It is quite a bit smaller and perfectly solid, it's not melting. It is a golden oval-shaped item, and it's covered in ants.
